经典的翻译还是翻译的经典? ——《汤姆叔叔的小屋》个案研究 翻译学研究中心博士生论坛(第46期)

20171018日下午,第46期翻译学博士论坛在广外六教B108举行。本次论坛由广外高级翻译学院16级博士生陈元飞主讲,题目为“经典的翻译还是翻译的经典?——《汤姆叔叔的小屋》个案研究”。博士生导师曾利沙教授、穆雷教授应邀出席,多名博士生和硕士生参与讨论,论坛由博士生邵星宇主持。

陈元飞首先界定了经典和经典化,并给出外国文学、翻译文学和本国文学在经典化道路上可行的12种不同路径。接着以翻译文学的经典化路径为核心,将其具体分为内向型和外向型翻译文学经典化过程,分别探讨各自所涉及的本国文学和翻译文学的范畴。然后以《汤》为个案,以详实的史料分析其作为外国文学的去经典化和作为翻译文学的经典化过程,并做出对比,以其巨大的张力凸显翻译在文学经典化道路上的重要作用。

陈元飞的主题发言引起了在场师生的热烈讨论,大家围绕重译、《汤》原著是否经典等话题展开对话,现场气氛热烈,不乏学术思想火花的碰撞。

   最后,曾利沙教授对本次论坛进行了总结和点评,提出(
1)应如何从文学性、艺术性等方面证明翻译是经典的;(2)文学翻译作品的经典性论断还需要补充文学理论知识,脱离了文学理论去讨论翻译作品的经典性将会局限于主观印象式的评说层面;(3)从某典型译作出发讨论翻译的经典性,有必要对《汤》这一文学作品的整体风格特征进行定性概括(避免以偏概全),不宜囿于单一的语言文化现象(如小说中的宗教说教);(4)理论层面的分类概说最好采用从下而上的归纳-演绎式语句方法,即从经验感性认识上升到理论感性,从微观到宏观,并结合具体原作-译作的关系,及其文学性、艺术性、传播性、接受效度性、历时性等一系列问题,对经典化现象进行可证性论述;(5)对于重译本而言,对于其他重译存在在的问题也应作出定性概括,指出问题的本质特点与成因,就事论事,这样才能使论述更具说服力。

翻译学博士论坛致力于为翻译学博硕士生搭建自由开放的学术交流平台。本次论坛主题新颖,内容丰富,为博士生和硕士生呈现了关于翻译实践、翻译出版的最新思考。主讲者和在场博硕士生都表示从中获益良多。

Chen firstly defined “classic” and“classicalization”, introducing 12 different paths to classic for foreignliterature, translated literature and domestic literature. Taking the paths toclassic for translated literature as the core, he then divided theclassicalization into introverted and extroverted process, respectivelyexploring the categories of the concerning domestic literature and translatedliterature. Then based on the case study of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, he analyzedwith rich historical records the “de-classicalization” process of foreignliterature and the “classicalization” process of translated literature, with anaim to highlight the important role translation plays in the way for literatureto classic.

The speech of Chen provoked a heateddiscussion among the teachers and students present around the topic of“retranslation”, “whether the original work of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is aclassic”.

Finally, professor Zeng commented on thespeech and proposed that whether the translation is a classic should be testedfrom its literary and artistic value, and he suggested that knowledge aboutliterature theory should be supplemented for qualitative description of theunique style and distinctive characteristics of literary works, so as toconduct specific discussion about the literary and artistic quality from macroand micro perspectives. Meanwhile, concrete translation defects of otherversions of translation should be analyzed to make the argument moreconvincing.

The Forum is dedicated to establishing afree and open academic exchange platform for translation studies. The speech isnovel in topic and rich in content, presenting the latest thoughts ontranslation practice and translation publication for doctoral students andmaster students.
