Stance andPositioning in News Translation

 

Abstract: News headlines are a kind of paratexts which occupy a privileged place ofpragmatics and strategy in news reports. They are expected to offer keyinformation of the news events and to attract the target readers. This seminardiscusses the stances and mediation reflected in the English-Chinesetrans-edited news reports on four international news events which happenedbetween the years 2008-2010. The four events are: Tiger Woods’s Divorce,Hillary Clinton’s response to a student’s question during her African trip, theAmerican CNN anchor Jack Cafferty’s remark about the Chinese, and the Americanmovie star Sharon Stone’s comments on the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan. Thechannels used for data collecting include both Western and Chinese mediaoutlets, such as websites of BBC, CNN, Foxnews, People’s Daily, Chinanews,Xinhuanet, YouKu, and the Hong Kong Headliner. The study draws on the Appraisalframework which was developed by Martin and White (2005) upon Halliday’s (1978,1995) SFL, as the theoretical support for the analysis. The analysis shows thatglobal news headlines involve working with discourse that is heavily mediatedand recontextualized in which the transeditors put their own values and theinstitutional stances into the transedited texts. It is argued that whenvalue-laden discourse is an indication of a stance adopted, an absence of suchdiscourse in news headlines, or even an absence of reporting on a particularevent may also be an indication of a stance adopted by a news agency.

ZhangMeifang received her PhD degree specializing in Translation Studies from HongKong Baptist University in the late 1990s. She is full professor at theUniversity of Macau and coordinator of the MA Programme of Translation Studies.Prof. Zhang is founding member and Vice President of the Macau Federation ofTranslators and Interpreters, as well as Council Member and Expert Member ofthe Chinese Translators’ Association. She also serves as editorial board member andreviewer for several academic refereed journals.Her mainresearch interests include functional and discourse analysis approaches toTranslation Studies; media and political discourses and translation; translationteaching and intercultural studies. Her most recent publications include: Functional Approaches to English-ChineseTranslation (《功能途径论翻译》Foreign Language Press, 2015) and Specialissue of Target: Discourse Analysis in Translation Studies (edited by Jeremy Mundayand Meifang Zhang, 27 (3) 2015).
