Title: The of Translation

 

Beginning with a specificprofessional translation job, which seemed to require an unorthodox solution toa fairly common problem, this paper argues that Mengzi's notion of can help us betterunderstand the complexities involved in this sort of situation--and indeed thatWestern reductive rationalism, for a long time the intellectual foundation oftranslation theory as well, leads to the apparent clash between principles andpractice, which can quite easily be solved with the emergent ecologicalthinking of ancient China.

 

Short-bio of Prof. Douglas Robinson

 

Professor Douglas Robinson iscurrently Chair Professor of English and former Dean of Arts at the Hong KongBaptist University.  Before coming toHong Kong in 2010 as Tong Tin Sun Chair Professor of English and Head of theDepartment of English at Lingnan University, he worked at the University ofMississippi for over 20 years in various academic and administrative positions.Professor Robinson received his Bachelors, Masters and Licentiatedegrees in English from the University of Jyväskylä in Finland, andlater obtained his second Masters degree and his PhD in English at the University of Washington,Seattle.  Professor Robinson is acritical theorist whose somatic and performative theories of communicationhave broken new ground in literary studies, linguistics and translationstudies. He has an impressive publication record which includes more than 20monographs and 5 textbooks as well as articles in refereed journals andtranslation work from Finnish, German and Russian; he has been cited over 2700times.

 

He is the author of TheTranslator's Turn, Translation andTaboo, Translation and Empire, Becoming a Translator, What Is Translation?, Who Translates?, Performative Linguistics, Translationand the Problem of Sway, and Schleiermacher'sIcoses, and editor of WesternTranslation Theory from Herodotus to Nietzsche. His forthcoming booksinclude Semiotranslating Peirce and The Dao of Translation. He is currentlyat work on a translation of Finland's greatest novel, Aleksis Kivi's Seven Brothers (1870).
