Prof. Chen Dehong, Dean of Translation School of Linnan University gave a lecture on world Englishes and English teaching on 21st, May,2015.
Chen talked about world Englishes, pointing out the existing various kinds of Englishes in the world,including the so-called standard American and Britain English, and the less standard Indian English and Chinese English. As an overwhelming lingua franca, English puts other language and culture in dangerous position featured by language imperialism and Neo-colonialism. Therefore, it is urgent to change the way of teaching English in order to maintain the diversity of culture and language. Chen proposed a solution, namely, speaking in English while thinking in one’s own language.
Chen’s lecture was inspiring and innovating, triggering a hot debate on language and culture among students.
